BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a New York shoplifting suspect has been rescued after he tried to hide in a sewer drain.

WHAM-TV (https://bit.ly/1MwPFWK ) says it happened Friday night in the Genesee County city of Batavia.

Police say two men ran from a Kmart store after allegedly stealing merchandise.

Authorities told the television station that one of the men tried to escape through the sewer system but ended up trapped underground.

The two men, whose identities were not immediately released, were taken into custody at the scene.

Police said the man who was rescued from the sewer was being treated for hypothermia.
