PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portugal. The Man is helping to put another $35,000 worth of musical instruments in the hands of students at a Portland middle school.

The Oregonian reports (https://bit.ly/1FliF0Z) the band surprised students with a performance Thursday morning, donating the instruments through a partnership with StubHub and the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

Ron Russell Middle School has six bands, six orchestras and three choirs. Students heard some of their performances Thursday.

Teachers and some of the school’s young musicians spoke to the audience before volunteers pulled a sheet from a table to reveal wooden upright basses, glistening metal horns and other instruments.

Bassist Zach Carothers said he and the rest of Portugal. The Man had been playing in band since childhood, and that it was important for them to help.
