AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Cody Grice scored a career-high three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score, as Akron raced away from Savannah State 52-9 for its first win of the season on Saturday.

Grice gained just 7 yards on five carries but scored the Zips first three TDs on runs of 1, 2 and 4 yards before halftime. He put Akron (1-2) on the board first with a dive from the 1, and his 2-yard run midway through the second quarter helped the Zips regain the lead 14-9.

Savannah State (0-2) had rallied to a 9-7 lead on a 30-yard field goal by John Barron and Juwuan Tolbert’s 81-yard return of a blocked field-goal try.

Akron scored the next seven touchdowns. Starting quarterback Travis Woodson completed 12 of 20 passes for 207 yards and a TD to Imani Davis. Tra’Von Chapman added another 128 yards passing, including a 50-yard scoring pass to Jerome Lane with 2:40 remaining.
