LINCOLNTON, N.C. (AP) - Lincolnton’s assistant fire chief has resigned amid allegations money was stolen from a fund intended to help children.

Local media outlets report that Bill Fortenberry resigned Friday from the Lincolnton Fire Department. Fortenberry was also treasurer of the Lincoln County chapter of the North Carolina Firefighters Burned Children’s Fund.

The chapter’s spokesman, Dion Burleson, said board members became suspicious of possible fraud, and the group’s president contacted local law enforcement last week.

The State Bureau of Investigation took over the investigation Thursday.

Fortenberry was promoted to assistant chief in June. A voicemail message left on his home phone Saturday was not immediately returned.
