AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The public will get a rare look at the Maine State Archives in a nod to American Archives Month.

The Maine State Archives is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will open to the public on two occasions in October. Visitors will get a chance to take a look at areas not normally accessible to the public on Oct. 13 and Oct. 31.

Areas that will be accessible to visitors will include historic original documents, the humidification chamber, the imaging center and more. There will also be a one-hour tour led by an archivist and an exhibit about the 50th anniversary of the archives.

The archives are also offering extended hours for researchers.

The Maine State Archives is a bureau of the Maine Department of the Secretary of State.
