SLIDELL, La. (AP) - A 46-year-old man was killed after law enforcement agents chased him on Interstate 10 early Saturday morning and fired at officers, authorities said.

The Times Picayune/Nola.com reports (https://bit.ly/1V1TKkV ) that the man was killed along Interstate 10 in Slidell by law enforcement. The man’s name was not released immediately.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said no officers were injured.

St. Tammany Sheriff Jack Strain said the incident began when an officer approached a white pickup truck traveling at a very low speed at about 2:30 a.m. He said a male passenger jumped out and ran away and the truck sped off, sparking a chase into New Orleans and then back to St. Tammany.

The sheriff said officers placed a spike strip on I-10 to stop the vehicle.

Officers from three agencies fired their weapons as the man emerged armed from his pickup, Strain said. (backslash)

Deputies later arrested a man they believe had jumped out of the pickup truck.

A portion of eastbound I-10 was shut down for about eight hours.
