PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota’s grouse and partridge hunting seasons open on Saturday.

State Game, Fish and Parks upland game biologist Travis Runia (ROON’-yuh) expects grouse hunting to be better than last year. Nearly 11,000 hunters harvested more than 35,000 prairie grouse in 2014.

Runia says prairie grouse numbers are not as easily determined as they are with pheasants, but spring surveys indicate an increase in adult prairie grouse with average reproduction.

The season runs through Jan. 3.
