OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma Republican Party officials say state party Chairman Randy Brogdon is planning to resign his position and call a meeting of the state committee to elect a new chairman.

GOP Vice Chair Estela Hernandez said Brogdon called her Wednesday to confirm he is stepping down before he sent an email announcing a state committee meeting on Sept. 12 to elect a new state GOP chairman.

Brogdon did not return telephone and email messages left Wednesday evening on his cellphone and at his office.

Hernandez said she intends to run for the chairman’s post.

Brogdon is a one-time tea party favorite who defeated the incumbent GOP chairman in May with the help of the party’s right wing. But his election also fostered division among separate GOP factions within the party.
