ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - A 53-year-old man accused in the 1987 slaying of a man he served time with at the Oregon State Penitentiary has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison.

The Democrat-Herald reports that (https://is.gd/chPhNv) Dennis Beach pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the death of 35-year-old Thomas Hyland. He was sentenced Wednesday in Linn County Circuity Court.

Beach was arrested in Dayton, Nevada, two years ago after a cold-case investigation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. Hyland’s remains were found by mushroom pickers near Sweet Home in 1989. He was fatally shot.

Authorities have said Beach was identified as a possible suspect but never arrested. Detectives uncovered new evidence and presented it to a grand jury, leading to the arrest warrant for Beach.

He was initially charged with aggravated murder and murder.
