NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) - Northwestern State University will recognize the late Officer Thomas LaValley, a 2007 NSU graduate, with a posthumous presentation and announcement of a scholarship established in his name.

KTBS-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1Ks6r94 ) university officials will make the presentation at 5:50 p.m. Thursday at Turpin Stadium as part of pregame ceremonies planned as part of the school’s first home football game.

Law enforcement agencies and associations and former colleagues of LaValley contributed to establish the Officer Thomas LaValley Memorial Scholarship.

LaValley earned a biology degree at Northwestern State and worked as a videographer in Shreveport. He began working as an officer in 2011 after graduating at the top of his class from the Shreveport Police Academy.

The 29-year-old was killed Aug. 5 while responding to a disturbance at a Shreveport residence.
