HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Nassau County officials say fatal heroin overdoses through Aug. 31 have doubled in the region compared to the same period last year.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1N9EsLU ) data released Tuesday by Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and police union officials shows 18 deaths in 2014, compared to 36 this year.

Authorities say the death toll was compiled by the Nassau County Police Department’s asset forfeiture and intelligence section. The data hasn’t been certified by the county medical examiner.
