ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Elko police say they’re investigating the possible attempted murder of an officer after a patrol car was hit by apparent gunfire over the weekend.
Elko Police Chief Ben Reed says the incident happened about 2 a.m. Sunday while the officer was driving in the downtown area between calls.
Reed says the officer heard a noise he initially thought was a rock striking the car. Further investigation revealed what appears to be a single bullet hole in the driver’s side door.
No one was hurt and there are no immediate suspects.
Police Lt. Ty Trouten told the Elko Daily Free Press Tuesday (https://tinyurl.com/omqwmf4) it could have been random gunfire. But he says they’re investigating the most serious crime of attempted murder before eliminating that possibility and reducing any potential charges.
