PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s new sailboat license plate design is dead in the water.

Gov. Gina Raimondo tells WPRO-AM (https://bit.ly/1NNEGZ1 ) that the state will not go ahead with the new design, which was developed under her predecessor, Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

The design was supposed to roll out this month. It featured a deep blue background and gold silhouette of the 1903 America’s Cup winner, Reliance, along with the phrase “Beautiful Rhode Island.”

Raimondo tells the station that the state will have a new design that conforms with a new statewide brand being developed as part of a larger tourism campaign.

The state’s current wave license plate design has been around since 1996.

She says new plates will be on hold for a few months, but did not give timing.
