SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The city of Sandy is banning the gas chamber in favor lethal injection in euthanizing animals.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1Fk38t6) that the city council approved the change Tuesday to the method that is considered more humane because it works more quickly.

The city’s animal services department will begin administering the injections next year to dozens of skunks and raccoons captured each month.

The city has already stopped using the gas chamber for cats and dogs unless an owner requests it.

Humane Society of Utah supported the change and offered an $8,000 grant for the equipment as well as free training for employees.

Former animal control officer Heather Beck told the council that euthanizing animals in the gas chamber was the most horrible part of the job.
