RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Contractors who hung flags of nations coming to Richmond for an international biking event are backpedaling.

They hung the flags upside down.

The flags were hung over the weekend outside the historic Main Street Station, an ornate rail station. They are intended to greet visitors coming to Virginia’s capital city for the UCI Road World Championships.

The good will gesture totaled nearly 70 nations.

A spokeswoman said the flags have been righted.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1Kp4JVV ) reports that one of the flags hanging upside down was the American flag, That typically is used as a distress signal.

The world championships event is expected to draw 450,000 spectators over nine days Sept. 19 to 27.
