THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - A half-cent sales tax increase will go before Thibodaux voters next spring, bringing sales tax within city limits to 8.95 cents on the dollar if approved.

The Thibodaux City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve holding a special March 5 election on the tax increase.

The Daily Comet reports (https://bit.ly/1JMTOPo) the sales tax is expected to raise about $2.4 million for the city for municipal services including constructing, acquiring, improving, extending, maintaining or operating public roads, public safety, parks and recreational facilities and other public improvements and facilities of the City.”

Thibodaux City Mayor Tommy Eschete said council members have final say about where money will be spent, but it will likely go toward operating expenses and construction projects, such as road and bridge repairs and building maintenance.
