CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Officers say a turkey found hanging by his feet from an apartment balcony in Charlotte has been rescued.

Local media outlets reported that Jennifer Gordon with Carolina Waterfowl Rescue says the turkey, now named Rocky, was shackled with metal wire that had dug into his legs and caused an infection. The nonprofit is currently caring for the turkey.

Gordon says Rocky also has a wing injury that will require surgery.

Melissa Knicely with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s animal control division says the apartment property manager alerted police about Rocky.

Knicely says Rocky was surrendered by his owners, who told officers they planned to eat him. Knicely says no charges have filed, but that an investigation is ongoing.
