SAN DIEGO (AP) - Veterinarians at San Diego Zoo Safari Park are trying to figure out why Nola the rhinoceros has a recurring abscess on her hip.

Last week Nola underwent a second procedure on the abscess and doctors took skin and blood samples for testing. Nola, one of only four northern white rhinos in the world, has been prescribed a series of antibiotics.

Zookeepers say the abscess is sore to the touch, but otherwise Nola, who weighs 4,500 pounds, has energy and is eating regularly.

The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday (https://lat.ms/1iGJItP) that, at 41, Nola is geriatric and has a series of old-age ailments, including arthritis.

Late last year Nola was treated for a severe sinus condition.

The world’s other northern white rhinos - all also geriatric - are in a preserve in Kenya.
