MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) - A group of Rhode Island lawmakers has taken a flying leap for charity.

Rep. Robert Nardolillo, a Coventry Republican, had invited the entire General Assembly and the state’s general officers to skydive Sunday morning for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

He got a lot of donors, but only 10 takers.

Reps. Robert Lancia, James McLaughlin, Jean Phillipe Barros, Doreen Costa, John Edwards and Karen MacBeth took part along with former Rep. Charles Knowles and Nancy Phillips, wife of Rep. Robert Phillips.

Nardolillo’s spokeswoman Lisa Blais said the event with Skydive Newport was “a little bit of a finger-crosser” because of cloudiness, but the sun came out, and “it was really something” to see the skydivers float down from 10,000 feet.

She said they expect to raise about $2,000.

Nardolillo is thinking of making it an annual event.
