PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) - University of Maine System trustees are kicking off their September meeting with an update from Chancellor James Page on efforts to consolidate functions to save money.

Page is seeking a single accreditation of the entire system as part of a “one university” vision for the seven campuses.

Page and the trustees, who began a two-day meeting on Sunday, have repeatedly said that maintaining seven campuses with different administrations is financially unsustainable. The system faces a project budget gap of $90 million by 2020.

Page said a single accreditation for all campuses has been tried elsewhere. The accrediting group has requested more information on the university’s plan.
