FAIRFAX, S.D. (AP) - Two people have pleaded not guilty to charges in a chase last month in which South Dakota authorities say shots were fired at sheriff’s deputies.

Twenty-nine-year-old Samantha Lane faces 11 charges including attempted murder and 29-year-old Nicholas Speckmeier faces 12 charges including attempted murder. The Daily Republic reports (https://bit.ly/1Jl7ksP ) that Lane recently pleaded not guilty and Speckmeier pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

The hour-long chase on Aug. 22 began when a deputy attempted a traffic stop outside of Bonesteel. Authorities say the chase involved an exchange of gunfire between deputies and Speckmeier, who was driving the car, and Lane. It ended in Fairfax.

Lane is from Sioux Falls and Speckmeier is from Worthington, Minnesota.
