WINTHROP, Mass. (AP) - Gov. Charlie Baker, House Speaker Robert DeLeo and other officials gathered with clergy and local residents at a beach near Logan airport to honor the 2-year-old girl authorities say was killed by her mother’s boyfriend and tossed into the ocean.

Dozens gathered Monday night on Deer Island, where Bella Bond’s remains were found in a plastic bag June 25. Hours earlier, Bella’s mother, Rachelle Bond, and the boyfriend, Michael McCarthy, pleaded not guilty in connection with her death. They were arrested Friday after police got a tip identifying the child.

Baker urged people to honor Bella by doing “something special” for another child.

DeLeo said the once-nameless girl touched people across the country who saw a dark-eyed, chubby-cheeked drawing circulated by police trying to identify her. He said she is “deeply loved by so many.”
