PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The leader of Rhode Island’s Roman Catholics says Pope Francis’s upcoming visit to the United States is an important moment for the church in the U.S.

Diocese of Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin will be among roughly 300 bishops meeting with the pontiff in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.

Tobin tells WJAR-TV (https://bit.ly/1isZxDH ) that this is a significant moment for the pope, and hopes the pope recognizes the “great generosity” of the American people.

The Diocese of Providence is sending 400 pilgrims to Philadelphia next weekend- where the pope is slated to visit - including groups from Brown University, Providence College and area Catholic schools.
