WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - The mayor of Cedar Rapids is launching a conservative think tank that he says first will focus on education, the economy and the environment.

Mayor Ron Corbett told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (https://bit.ly/1KG8zrV ) that people want substantive discussions of issues and says Iowa does “have some challenges and some problems.”

He says the think tank, Engage Iowa, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, with a tax status that prevents it from lobbying. Corbett says the Iowa Policy Project is probably the only comparable organization in the state and says it tends to focus on liberal issues. He says Engage Iowa will be “another voice” offering ideas in the state.

Corbett says he soon will create an advisory board and seek people to serve on councils that will focus on specific issues.
