RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Police in Raleigh say a Lee County detention officer faces several charges after a female prisoner reported being sexually assaulted.

The Raleigh Police Department said 55-year-old David Adams Jr. is charged with second-degree sex offense and sex offense in violation of a state statute that applies to offenses committed by a person who has a victim in their custody.

A police statement said the prisoner reported that she was assaulted while being transported from Lee County to Raleigh. Information indicated that the offense occurred within the Raleigh city limits, and police were contacted. A follow-up investigation led to the arrest.

Adams was arrested in Sanford last Saturday and taken to the Wake County Detention Center. Bail is set at $500,000 and it’s not known if Adams has an attorney.
