NEW YORK (AP) - An off-duty Long Island police officer has been arrested in a hit-and-run accident that critically injured a motorcyclist.

Police say Suffolk County Police Officer Thomas O’Neil turned himself in on Monday on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an incident resulting in serious physical injury.

The 44-year-old officer has been suspended without pay. Police say he submitted a blood sample to be analyzed for alcohol and drugs. Information on his lawyer was not immediately available.

Police say Charles Giardinello was riding a motorcycle in Ronkonkoma Sunday night when he was struck by a pickup truck attempting to turn into a parking lot. The pickup then fled the scene.
