NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - Police are investigating after a 2-year-old boy was found in a Connecticut residence with life-threating burns to half his body.

Police say an ambulance was sent to the New London residence Sunday morning after a report that the boy was having trouble breathing. Emergency responders determined he was suffering from first- and second-degree burns.

He was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and later airlifted in critical condition to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Massachusetts. The hospital specializes in treating burns on children.

Police say detectives are trying to determine if the incident was accidental or criminal. They say several people have been interviewed and that the residence was searched.

The New London County State’s Attorney’s Office and the state Department of Children and Families have been alerted.
