DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a trooper responding to a fatal crash died when his patrol car ran off an Interstate 295 ramp and overturned.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says that shortly after 7 a.m. Monday, an eastbound 2004 Dodge pickup truck ran off U.S. 460 in Dinwiddie County and hit a guardrail. The driver, 65-year-old Donald W. Shaw of Montgomery, Louisiana, died later at Southside Regional Medical Center.

A trooper at the crash scene radioed for help. Other troopers understood the call to mean there was an officer in distress as well as a crash victim, and several responded to the scene.

Among them was 27-year-old Trooper Nathan-Michael W. Smith of Henrico, whose car crashed in Prince George County. He died at VCU Medical Center.
