HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) - A Harrisonburg city spokeswoman says a man fired a shotgun at police before the officers fatally shot him.

Police have said 23-year-old Michael Thomas Pierce of Harrisonburg was shot early Sunday morning during a confrontation with police.

City spokeswoman Mary Hope Vass tells The Daily News-Record (https://bit.ly/1KKwtCH ) that Pierce disregarded the officers’ repeated commands to drop the shotgun before he fired at them.

Vass says investigators are reviewing footage recorded by the officers’ body cameras.

Police said earlier that the officers encountered Pierce, who was white, outside a residence after they responded to a report of a disturbance. Pierce didn’t live at the residence.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave. They haven’t been identified.
