OREGON INLET, N.C. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 38-year-old man who was last seen spear fishing near the Bonner Bridge in Oregon Inlet.

A statement says the Coast Guard had been searching for Kristopher Mueller of Avon. The search was called off on Monday.

Coast Guard personnel were notified at 5:30 p.m. Saturday after Mueller had not been seen for more than an hour. His vehicle was found by the National Park Service, and personnel from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet discovered Mueller’s kayak with fish, a life jacket and a cell phone still aboard. There was also snorkeling gear on a piling nearby.

Coast Guard crews covered more than 1,600 square miles in searching offshore east of Oregon Inlet and southwest into Pamlico Sound.
