SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Authorities are saying a carjacking suspected was firing a weapon when he was shot and killed by deputies near San Leandro.

KNTV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1NJKG3A) Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers responded to a report Tuesday morning of a man walking near the freeway. Sheriff’s Sgt. JD Nelson says the man began to fire a weapon and fled.

Nelson said a passing vehicle was hit by one of the suspect’s bullets, which is when deputies fatally shot the man.

Authorities suspect the man of carjacking a Black Dodge Durango in Oakland and possibly firing a weapon at the vehicle owner. An attempted carjacking was reported shortly after the Dodge was found on Interstate 580.

Nelson said the suspect was in his 30s.
