MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Drivers, be alert for moose.

Moose are more likely to be crossing roads at this time of year, especially after dark or early in the morning.

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says the peak of their breeding season is late September and the first two weeks of October. Last year, 65 moose were involved in collisions with motor vehicles or trains in Vermont. There have been 44 this year.

Drivers are asked to be vigilant and reduce speed when they see moose crossing signs along the highway.

Last week in New Hampshire, a driver died after his car collided with a moose in Lincoln on Interstate 93.
