ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Testimony is underway in the murder trial of a former Ivy League student charged with fatally shooting his father inside the family’s suburban Rochester home earlier this year.

Jury selection was completed Monday in Monroe County Court for 19-year-old Charles Tan’s second-degree murder trial. Prosecutors and Tan’s defense attorney made opening statements Tuesday morning, with testimony starting in the afternoon.

Authorities say he used a shotgun to kill 49-year-old Liang “Jim” Tan at the family’s home in the upscale suburb of Pittsford last February. The younger man was enrolled at Cornell University in Ithaca at the time of the shooting.

Tan’s attorney claims that Jim Tan was abusive for years toward Tan, the teen’s brother and his mother.

Jim Tan was president of Dynamax Imaging in nearby Canandaigua.
