KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Transportation Department officials plan improvements on a road near the Wright Brothers National Memorial on the Outer Banks.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported (https://bit.ly/1NQPAO5) that the agency held a public hearing last week on a $17 million project to resurface, widen and raise parts of Colington Road in Kill Devil Hills.

The four-mile stretch of road offers scenic views but suffers when wind pushes waves over the pavement or heavy rain leaves pools of water even in the middle of the road.

The work includes widening the two-lane route, lifting the pavement in low spots and adding paved paths for cyclists and pedestrians.

More public meetings are planned before the project begins. Officials hope to complete the improvements in 2018.
