GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) - Officials with the Cascade County Regional Detention Center and the Montana Department of Justice say an inmate found unresponsive Friday had died from hanging himself.

The Great Falls Tribune reports (https://goo.gl/sIwf0f ) that the investigation into the death of 55-year-old Frank Vieira is still ongoing. A Justice Department spokesman says the inmate was in lockdown and alone in his cell at the time of his death.

Fergus County Coroner Dick Brown says an autopsy completed Saturday found the cause of death was asphyxia due to hanging.

Vieira was serving a life sentence for three counts of felony sexual abuse of children from Deer Lodge County and was not eligible for parole.
