ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A longtime Minnesota state senator is undergoing treatment for lung cancer.

Senate Democrats’ spokeswoman Alyssa Siems Roberson confirmed Wednesday Sen. Jim Metzen was receiving chemotherapy treatments for returning lung cancer. He’s being treated at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

First elected to the House in 1974, Metzen’s 40 years in the Legislature make him among the longest-tenured lawmakers in Minnesota.

The South St. Paul Democrat has represented southeastern Twin Cities’ suburbs since he jumped up to the Senate in 1986. He also served as Senate president from 2003 to 2011.
