HOUMA, La. (AP) - The Terrebonne Parish Council has approved the construction contract for a marsh creation project in Chauvin.

The Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1OrRmoK) a resolution awarded Slidell-based Coastal Dredging Co. with the low bid of $2.9 million for the creation of marshland around the Ward 7 levee.

The project is in mitigation for the Lower Ward 7 levee or the portion of the levee between Lashbrooke Street and Boudreaux Canal. Mitigation is work that is legally required to make up for the environmental impact of projects such as roads, new buildings and levees constructed in environmentally sensitive areas.

For every acre of wetlands or forest a project impacts or destroys, a certain amount must be rebuilt elsewhere in the system.
