LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) - Lake Placid’s mayor says a village resident was wounded when her 3-year-old son accidentally fired a handgun in the family’s apartment.

Mayor Craig Randall says police told him a couple was home with their two young children when the gun went off, wounding the woman around 9 a.m. Tuesday. She was hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday afternoon.

Police Chief William Moore says it looks like the shooting was an accident. He did not identify the family. He said he wouldn’t comment on whether the child fired the gun until a thorough investigation was done.

Moore said the shooting appeared to be the result of careless storage of the weapon.
