SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - A doctor charged with smuggling drugs into a northeastern Pennsylvania county jail and other crimes is set to stand trial.

Opening statements were expected Tuesday in the trial of 45-year-old Stephanie Tarapchak.

The Schuylkill County osteopath is charged with writing illegal prescriptions for herself and others who were hooked on painkillers and anxiety drugs.

She’s also charged with sneaking Vicodin and other drugs into the Lackawanna County Prison when she spent 10 weekends there after being found in contempt of court during child custody hearings in 2011.

The hearings occurred after Tarapchak’s 16-year-old daughter overdosed on Xanax provided by the doctor, which prompted the girl’s father to seek an emergency court custody order.

Tarapchak is also charged with providing drugs which caused a 52-year-old patient’s fatal overdose.

Tarapchak’s attorney denies the charges.
