PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon Department of Transportation officials say they’re planning to shut down a growing homeless camp in Portland.

KATU-TV News reports (https://goo.gl/m6J0EA ) the land where dozens of people have been living in tents is owned by the Oregon Department of Transportation. Officials say they’re working with Portland police to do a sweep of the land this week.

Transportation department spokesman Don Hamilton cites safety as the reason behind the move, saying people are living too close to cars driving on city streets. He also said it’s the department’s responsibility to keep the land clean.

One woman who told KATU she was living in the area said she doesn’t plan to move. Another said most of the people living there lack the resources to go elsewhere.
