GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A repeat felon has been sentenced to life without parole after being convicted of assault and robbery over prescription pills.

The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/1V7gUq9 ) reports that Harrison County Circuit Court Judge Roger Clark sentenced 38-year-old Kendrick L. Casey of Gulfport as a violent habitual offender Monday.

A jury last week convicted Casey of aggravated assault and armed robbery. Prosecutors said he shot a man in the shoulder after robbing him of pills in 2013.

Casey had been convicted of six felonies in the past, including attempted rape in 1995 and possession of a firearm by a felon in 2008.

Casey’s attorney asked the judge for leniency, but District Attorney Joel Smith says the judge followed sentencing parameters for habitual offenders who have at least two felony convictions, including one that was a crime of violence.
