PARAGOULD, Ark. (AP) - The Greene County Sheriff’s Department has ruled that a 12-year-old boy’s death at Crowley’s Ridge Raceway was an accident.

Ross Curtner of Brookland died Saturday after a race car went over the track’s retaining wall. Sheriff David Carter says it appears that the car lost control as it went around a curb, went airborne and struck the boy when it landed on the retaining wall where he was standing.

Chief Deputy Rick Mellow calls the death “a freak accident.” He says the track’s management isn’t guilty of negligence and no charges will be filed.

Owner Trent Francis says it was the first fatal accident at the track in its 29 years of operation.
