LINCOLN, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island State Police are investigating a Lincoln fire district for what the town administrator says are potential financial improprieties.

Administrator T. Joseph Almond tells WPRI-TV (https://bit.ly/1V6RbOH ) the state police were called in Monday.

The investigation comes as the financially troubled Lonsdale Fire District decided in June to lay off five full-time firefighters. The district’s entire board of fire wardens resigned at the beginning of the year.

Wardens said at the time that there was only about $14,000 in the district’s account, which had an annual budget of about $600,000.

A fiscal review found that the district’s treasurer identified improprieties related to the use of health care funds.

Lonsdale board chairman Joe Tashash says board members continue to work on a fiscal investigation.
