INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - A homeless man has been charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of another man outside an Independence convenience store.

Jackson County prosecutors say 40-year-old William R. Godfrey was charged Tuesday in the death of 53-year-old Paul Doughty.

Court documents say a clerk at the store called police early Monday after finding both men unresponsive in an alley while he was dumping trash.

Doughty died at the scene and Godfrey was found nearby bloody and unresponsive.

A probable cause statement said Godfrey told police he became upset and began beating Doughty with a cane and a crate when Doughty said he wanted to quit drinking and tried to leave.

Prosecutors have requested a $150,000 cash bond for Godfrey. It was not clear if he had retained a lawyer.
