PARIS, Texas (AP) - A trooper in Northeast Texas has fatally shot a combative man during a fight that left the officer hurt.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the trooper was treated for a dislocated shoulder following Monday night’s incident near Paris Regional Medical Center.

Sgt. Lonny Haschel (HASH’-el) says the trooper saw a man sitting on the concrete barrier in the center of U.S. 82. The trooper tried to check on 21-year-old Steven McKenney of Austin, but the suspect became belligerent.

DPS says the pair struggled and the trooper used a stun gun but couldn’t subdue McKenney. Haschel says the trooper feared for his life and opened fire.

McKenney died at the scene.

The trooper, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was put on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
