JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi Congressman Bennie G. Thompson says the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a First in the World Development Program grant in the amount of $2.9 million to Jackson State University.

The program is part of President Barack Obama’s agenda to drive innovation and keep a higher education within reach for all Americans. The Department of Education awarded nearly $60 million to 17 colleges and universities.

Thompson, in a news release Monday, said the project will work to improve both teaching and learning in STEM disciplines - science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
