CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The trial for a New Hampshire man accused of trying to sell a 14-year-old for sex is underway.

William Shine, of Franklin, appeared Monday in Merrimack County Superior Court in Concord on charges of child sex trafficking and endangering the welfare of a child.

Anthony O’Hickey testified that he offered to work with police to try to protect the girl from his own father, who talked about buying her from Shine. O’Hickey says his father sexually abused him as a child.

Prosecutors say O’Hickey gave Shine and his wife $1,000 on Nov. 25, 2014 to take the girl to a hotel for sex.

They say the couple was desperate for money.

The defense claims they were considering an arranged courtship which they say isn’t a crime under New Hampshire law.
