ABILENE, Texas (AP) - Investigators believe an online personal ad posted on Craigslist by an Abilene police officer led to a meeting with a West Texas couple now accused of killing him.

A search warrant affidavit obtained by the Abilene Reporter-News (https://bit.ly/1KyCjmm) says the lead investigator, Texas Ranger Danny Crawford, believes Phillip and Violet Walter met Officer Don Allen in response to Allen’s Craigslist posting. In the affidavit, Crawford states the meeting led to Allen’s death and the theft of property from his home in Clyde, about 15 miles east of Abilene.

The affidavit did not detail the contents of Allen’s Craigslist ad.

The Walters remain in Taylor County Jail charged with murder in Allen’s Aug. 31 death. Bonds are set at $500,000 each. Police believe Allen, his hands and feet bound, was strangled.
