COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - The interim chief of the Central Coventry Fire District is stepping down days after the state asked a judge to end the district’s receivership and pull it out of bankruptcy.

Shawn Murray submitted his letter of resignation Tuesday, effective Sept. 30.

District receiver Mark Pfeiffer, who filed a motion Friday to dismiss the district’s Chapter 9 bankruptcy case, appointed Murray.

Murray said in his letter of resignation that he quit because the state abandoned efforts to implement a financial reorganization of the fire district last week. He says the plan was a “roadmap to the future sustainability” of the district.

Union President David Gorman says he was saddened but not surprised by the resignation.

WPRI-TV reached out to Murray for comment but has not heard back.
