RIGA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say an ambulance has rear-ended a backhoe while en route to an emergency in New York, killing a crew member.

The Monroe County sheriff’s office says three members of an ambulance crew from a volunteer fire department in Bergen were headed to a call Wednesday morning when they crashed into the slow-moving backhoe in the neighboring town of Riga (RY’-gah), 15 miles southwest of Rochester.

Deputies say emergency medical technician Barry Miller was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Ambulance driver Zackery Czudak wasn’t injured. EMT Gina Bliss was treated for minor injuries. The backhoe driver was not hurt.

Czudak told investigators he slowed down because of sun glare and patches of fog.
